Quad Shanties

To the Editors of The Crimson:

We are petitioning the powers that be for the right to build our own set of shanties in the Yard. These will replicas of the Quad to protest our being Quaded, to request that Harvard divest from itself for letting the Quad get into bad condition. In our "Statement of Policy" we wish to stress that our premise for our demands is that Harvard has let much of the Quad become rundown, has threatened to cut-off badly needed renovations for lack of funds, and has made that Quad situation much worse than it already was.

Members of both the conservative and liberal factions are likely to be angry with us for what may seem a mockery of their edifices which currently beautify our Yard. But we feel we are one minority group poorly represented. We respect their grievances, and although we may seem to be upstart, disgruntled freshman unhappy with out exile to suburbia, we ask that our grievances be given equal respect. Discourse is needed on this otherwise apathetic campus; all we ask that you consider some issues close to home, especially since we at the Quad aren't close to home at all.

You can tell us, "This is a joke." But heh, when we look out the window there is this town and we being stupid freshman say to ourselves why is there this town so close to home where all these radical conservativces and radical liberals get to stay indefinitely when we have to go to the Quad? I mean we heard from some official sources who know someone at who knows someone who knows Dean Epps' secretary and he says that all the radical groups are Quadlings in search of closer housing. This makes sense, our source says: the "Ivory Tower" alone sleeps eight. The thing is guys, do you have room for 400? "OUR TOWN" is thus clearly deficient on that standard. And guys what about the CRR, I mean they need some representation. They are oppressed, too, and you are talking about kicking them off campus just like us?

On yeah, don't take this as protest against suburbia, we like green grass but we just can't see it in the Yard! Jane Murphy '89   Francis Elek '89
