Harvard, which prides itself on making athletics and academics work together hand-in-hand, has now gone a step further. The Coach-Faculty and Intramurals Subcommittee of the Faculty's Standing Committee on Athletics issued open invitations to all faculty members for the October 28 Harvard-Princeton football game.

According to subcommittee chair Jeffrey Wolcowitz, the outing has received an "overwhelming response so far" from the faculty. Wolcowitz said the subcommittee had no idea how many people would sign up for the outing, and most expectations ranged from five to 200 people. But the Dunster House senior tutor thinks that approximately 400 faculty members have already accepted the invitation.

`Talk of the Faculty'

Professor of Government Susan J. Pharr said that the event has been "the talk of the faculty" and that she is planning to go with her entire family.

Wolcowitz said that his subcommittee had asked itself, "What is coach-faculty relations?" and decided that the answer involved his committee becoming a "social committee."

"We wanted to create events so that members from both sides of the river meet each other and be less skeptical about each other," Wolcowitz said. "We wanted to bring the athletic and faculty communities together and create less suspicions."

Besides the Princeton football game, the committee is also planning to invite the entire faculty to one of the women's basketball games this winter.

All the Coach's Men: Harvard men's basketball Coach Peter Roby filled out his coaching staff this week when Ted Woodward was named Harvard's newest assistant coach.

A former assistant coach at UConn, Woodward replaces Tom Thibodeau, who was named assistant coach of the NBA Minnesota Timberwolves last month.

Woodward was a member of two East Coast conference champion Bucknell squads in the early 1980s and was on the UConn coaching staff when the Huskies claimed the NIT championship in 1988. Woodward also earned an M.A. in education from UConn last spring.

Quote of the Week: "I didn't trip the girl in the box. I thought about tripping her, but I didn't do it."--Harvard women's soccer Co-Captain Andrea Montalbano on her tripping penalty which set up UConn's first goal on a penalty kick in the Huskies' 2-0 win Thursday over the Crimson.
