Baxter Bombed in Opener; Crimson Blanked in Nightcap

By Peter I. Rosenthal

When your ace gets hammered for six runs in two innings in the first game and your offense produces but two hits in the second game, the only thing you can do is pray for rain.

But the rain that washed out Saturday's doubleheader against Princeton (19-15 overall, 9-7 EIBL) was long gone yesterday as Harvard (12-19-1, 6-8) made up its twinbill with the Tigers at Soldiers Field and dropped two, 12-4 and 4-0.

Senior southpaw Bob Baxter, who entered the game with a team-low 1.50 ERA, was racked for eight hits and six runs in an uncharacteristically poor outing in the opener.

"I felt fine," Baxter said. "They just hit really well. I guess I threw too many strikes. It was bound to happen eventually."

Harvard found itself down, 8-0, before putting two on the board in the bottom of the fifth. The Crimson tallied one run in each of the final two frames, but the Princeton's four runs in the top of the seventh added insult to injury. Harvard sent five pitchers to the mound in the first game and gave up a total of 13 hits.

Shooting Blanks

In the second game, Harvard received much stronger pitching from Mike Dorrington. The senior hurler went all the way, yielding four runs, including a solo round-tripper to Tiger third baseman Brad Remig. But two Crimson errors and six walks hurt Dorrington's cause.

"I didn't have my greatest stuff," Dorrington said. "You just have to go out there and keep them down and hope your team can mount a rally."

No Sparks

Captain Tom Konjoyan opened the game with a bloop single to left-center that eluded Princeton's colliding outfielders. That would prove to be the last hit Harvard would get until two outs in the seventh. Batting for the final time, second baseman Jim Mrwoka tried to spark a rally with a double to left-center, but catcher Jay Jakimczyk struck out to end the game.

Tiger pitcher Dan McPhee notched a complete-game shutout while allowing just two hits and two walks.

"[McPhee] didn't throw hard," Konjoyan said. "He just kept us off balance."

THE NOTEBOOK: Princeton's hitting star was freshman outfielder Jeff Schweitzer, who had five hits in the twinbill, going 4-for-5 in the second game...Because of Saturday's rainout, Harvard's doubleheader against Cornell scheduled for yesterday will be played this afternoon..."We're a streaky team," Konjoyan said. "Hopefully, we'll be hot [against Cornell]." Tigers, 12-4 at Soldiers Field
