IN THE Democratic race for state treasurer, we give our support to House Speaker George Keverian '53 of Everett, Mass. Keverian, to be sure, has been sadly ineffective in his last year on the job, repeatedly failing in his efforts to pressure his colleagues into responsible action to combat the state budget deficit.
Nonetheless, Keverian's failings stem more from active legislative resistance than from poor judgement on his part. He has consistently advocated responsible action to curb the budget deficit, and his campaign indicates that he will continue to do so as treasurer.
In addition, he boasts a record of integrity and openness that is unequalled by either of his rivals. Despite his poor showing of late, Keverian deserves another shot to tighten the fiscal reins on state government.
