Tuitions at public colleges and universities rose sharply last year, with 12 to 13 percent rate hikes that were double the usual increase, according to a survey released Tuesday by the College Board.
Tuitions at private colleges and universities showed a normal increase of 6 to 7 percent, according to the survey. The average cost of tuition, room and board this year was $10,017 at private colleges and universities and $2137 at public schools, the survey said.
At Harvard, total student enrollment costs this year amounted to $22,080, the Admissions Office said, a jump of about 7 percent.
Dean of Admissions William R. Fitzsimmons '67 said yesterday that "it's much too early to tell" whether the public-sector tuition increase will affect Harvard admissions or fundraising.
