New Shuttle Schedule Issued

Change Made in Response to Complaints From First-Years

By Tara H. Arden-smith, Contributing Reporter

Harvard instituted on October 29 a new shuttle service schedule in response to complaints of unpredictable arrival times from first-years living at 29 Garden St.

The new schedule sets specific times in which the shuttle buses plan to stop at 29 Garden St. This plan replaces the 20-minute loop by which shuttles had operated on at the beginning of the year.

"Now students will know at exactly what time the shuttle is supposed to arrive, which should save them time and hassle," said Jeffrey L. Smith, associate director of Facilities and Maintenance.

Feedback from shuttle users moved Manager of Shuttle Services and Garage Operations Carl A. Tempesta to decide on a set schedule.

"Students didn't know how long they would have to wait for a shuttle to come, and they had legitimate complaints about that," he said.

In the past, students have said the lack of scheduled stops deterred them from using the shuttle bus service, and often, buses had been picking up less than 20 students per run.

Since the schedule was adopted--and posted in several areas on campus--shuttles have been picking up between 20 to 35 students per run.

Future changes are also in the works. Tempesta is considering a stop at 29 Garden St. after picking up Currier House residents. The issue of student safety has stalled the addition of a stop on the south side of the street, but Tempesta said that he recognizes the students' need for maximum efficiency.
