A Dorchester man was fatally shot and two others were injured while their car was stopped at a traffic light on the northern side of Central Square early Saturday morning.
Police arrested Shawn Carter, a 20 year-old Cambridge man, and charged him with murder in the attack, which they told The Boston Globe "had all the earmarks of gang-related violence."
"This was not a random shooting," Deputy Superintendent Michael Giacoppo of the Cambridge Police Department told The Globe. "It very well could be a gang-type shooting. It certainly fits that scenario."
Police said Carter got out of a car stopped behind that of the victims at the intersection of Cambridge and Columbia streets, and approached their front passenger window. When none of the passengers would open the window, Carter pulled a semiautomatic pistol from his waistband and shot 17 times, police said.
The victims drove to a doughnut shop in Somerville to call for help immediately following the shooting.
