Valentine's Day at Harvard

Students to Celebrate Occasion in a Variety of Ways

By Celeste M.K. Yuen, Contributing Reporter

Flowers and candy. A sleeping bag for two. And "Studs" live in the Quincy House dining hall.

It's Valentine's Day at Harvard.

For some it's lonely. But for those with love in their lives, this holiday will be an exercise in living out a story-book romance.

Quincy House resident Timothy P. McCarthy '93, for example, will spend the weekend with his girlfriend who surprised him by flying in from Colorado.

"All of my roommates knew, and they came close to blowing it by almost telling me the secret," McCarthy said.

Staying at home today, Juliet E. McMains '94 said she will make breakfast in bed for her boyfriend. And Orion K. Ross '92 said he planned "a very exclusive party" for his boyfriend.

"We're planning a slumber party for the two us with only one sleeping bag," Orion said.

The Dateless

But what about the loveless ones who cringe at the thought of Valentine's Day?

Following an age-old pattern of Harvard men, Paul, J. Dean '94 said that, if all else fails, he'll go to Wellesley.

Others said they have accepted that it's going to be a lonely Valentine's Day.

"No Dins have dates," said Gavan F. Meehan '94, a members of the Din and Tonics who will be singing tonight. "It's really tragic."

And David R. Gammons '92 said his day would be dismal as well--but he didn't have an excuse.

"I'm better because no one's my Valentine," Gammons said.
