Ivy Coaches Choose Maher Player of Year

How sweet it is.

In Wednesday's vote of the eight Ivy League women's basketball coaches, Harvard Junior Erin Maher was chosen the 1991-92 Ivy player of the year.

She is the first Crimson to be so honored.

"It's a real exciting league. Just being recognized means a lot to me, "Maher said. "It came as a result of everyone working together well as a team. When the team plays well, it makes individual players look better."

Also named to first-Team All-Ivy, Maher finished this year's campaign leading the Ancient Eight in-3-point field goals, nailing 43 out of 86.

The most recent NCAA Division I statistics ranked Maher fifth nationally in 3-point field goals made per game (3.1) and 3-point field goal percentage (.484).

While many players are ranked in one of these two categories, few establish themselves in both.

Maher was also thirds in the league in scoring (17.3 points-per-game),fifth in filed goal percentage (.483) and fourth in assists (4.9 assists-per-game).

She led the Crimson in overall scoring this season with an average of 17.1 ppg.

"I think the most qualified players [for the award] this year were Erin and Debbie Flandermeyer," Coach Kathy Delaney Smith said. "They were both tremendously strong can didates."

Although she didn't capture player of the year honors this season, Flandermeyer was still a unanimous selection to the All-Ivy First Team. This is the second straight season in which she was so honored.

Flandermeyer led the Ivy League in both scoring (17.6 ppg) and field goal percentage (.564). She also led the Crimson in rebounding with 8.7 rebounds-per-game.

Rounding out the All-Ivy First Team are Pennsylvania senior Dionne Anthon, Brown senior Shonica Turnstall and Dartmouth Junior Renee Reed.

Yale's Mary Kalich and Brown's Martina Jerant were named Ivy Co-Rookies of the Year.
