Winthrop Seniors Get Singles

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Thank you very much for Tara ArdenSmith's favorable article on life in Winthrop. There is no question that Winthrop House is a wonderful place and deserves good press.

However, there was one factual error in the article that I feel must be corrected. Ms. Arden-Smith claimed in her article that due to overcrowding, "even seniors are deprived of opportunities to choose suites with singles." Thankfully this is not true. All Winthrop seniors have singles within their suites. In fact, Winthrop House is not more crowded than Eliot House these days. Perhaps first-years will be relieved to know that the housing office does take care of us, and has been in the process of fixing our overcrowding. Finally I would like to add that while our "high school" and "gossipy" reputations are something of which we are proud, they are not the only aspects of life at Winthrop. While not intellectually pretentious, we are not anti-intellectual. Listen carefully next time you are in our checkerboard dining hall. Sure you'll hear good news about the newest Winthrop couple, but you will also hear about some great lecture or reading someone's been doing.

Again I would like to thank Ms. Arden-Smith for her article and I encourage all first-years to venture down to Winthrop to check it out themselves. Aren R. Cohen '94   President   Winthrop House Committee
