Students To Register Today

By Eliot Bush

6,625 undergraduates are expected to register today at Memorial Hall between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Joseph Maruca, assistant registrar for scheduling, said yesterday that he expects the "6,500 students who were on campus last fall," to register, plus "125 who were on leave."

Those students that were on leave in the fall are required to register at 20 Garden Street between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

To handle the masses of students, the Registrar's office has hired 25 proctors to work in Memorial Hall for registration, Maruca said.

Although traditionally a large fraction of students receive a "red dot" on their registration packets due to being behind on tuition payments, Maruca said he did not expect many red dots this year.

"We did a mailing at the end of January to those that weren't cleared to register as of January 20th," Maruca said yesterday. "It came up to 3,600 names."

Because of the new mailing, students were given a chance to pay their dues before registration.

"Some of it is just financial aid papers that haven't been processed," he said. "I'm assuming that between January 20th and tonight a lot has cleared up."

In past years some students were unable to register until they received certain vaccinations. Due to a policy change, no registration packets will be withheld this year because of vaccination, Maruca said.
