Attacks on Knowles, Lewis Unfair; Profanity Not Needed

DISSENT

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Although the staff's opinion on student participation in the selection of administrators is well-taken, their condemnation of both Professor Lewis and Dean Knowles seems inappropriate and unfounded. First, it is unfair to place the blame for all of Harvard's computer woes solely on Lewis's shoulders. The construction of a campus-wide, high-speed data network is tricky business and was completed within the last two years with commendable, if not exactly optimal, speed and efficiency. More importantly, the staff cannot expect that the man in charge of the Faculty of the world's most prestigious university should always have the time to deal with undergraduates' every concern. Knowles' failure to consult undergraduates in the appointment of Professor Lewis was a simple mistake, and unless the staff cites other specific examples of Knowles being "hopelessly, and unapologetically, out of touch," it should not be construed as evidence of any Ivory-tower ennui. --Tehshik P. It is my great hope that, by Frebruary of next year, the staff will have learned to phrase its opinions in more eloquent terms than "So screw you."   --Daniel Altman '96
