They could have hopped on a flight to Cancun for spring break.
But when Paul K. Kim '96 and Vanessa V. Gil '97 found a wad of cash on Plympton St. on March 23, they promptly returned it to Tommy's House of Pizza.
Both estimated the bundle of bills to be approximately $3,000.
Kim said he was heading to The Crimson building to meet a friend when he saw something on the street after crossing Mt. Auburn St. heading up Plympton St.
"I was about to walk just past it ignoring what it was, and then I looked a second time, and I saw the bundle on the street," Kim said.
"I stood on the corner and stared at the bundle for a little while and then another student walked by," Kim said.
He said even though he did not know the student, he was so shocked at finding the wad of cash that he asked her to look at it.
The student, Gil, said she looked down and saw "a really thick wad of $50 bills."
"She too was surprised and together we stared at it for a little longer," Kim said. "Then she picked up the bundle, and we realized that it was all cash with a deposit slip ready for bank deposit," he said.
Kim said the cash was in $20 and $50 bills.
Gil said the deposit slip indicated that the money belonged to Tommy's.
"On the other side of it, it had a receipt saying it belonged to Tommy's Pizza, and we decided we should take it back," Gil said.
"We joked about taking off for Cancun," Gil added.
Tommy's, however, gave them a cool reception, Gil said. Upon returning the money, employees at Tommy's were "rude about it--they took the money and didn't even say thank you," she said.
Gil said she suggested to the man at Tommy's that they should give Kim a free pizza.
"They were more concerned about the money," Gil said. "It was quite a lot of money, but they didn't offer us any pizza."
