Field Hockey Ends Season With Win

Concluding an often-arduous season with pride, the Harvard field hockey team (7-10, 3-4 Ivy) defeated Brown, 3-1, on Saturday.

"We did everything right," said junior Judy Collins. "We needed to win to finish the season well."

By winning its first turf game of the season and its second game on the road, Harvard showed its heart along with snapping a three-game losing streak.

"It was a good ending note to win away because we haven't been as successful on the road this year," said co-captain Beck Stringer.

The Crimson's resilience also brightened the victory. Brown grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a penalty corner past sophomore Anya Cowan 10 minutes into the first half.

"The game was a nice showing of our character that we could come back and win," Stringer said.

The early Brown goal was the lone score allowed by Cowan, who made six saves on the afternoon.

"The first 10 minutes we were unsettled and panicky," Cowan said. "But after they scored we got ourselves together and started to play our game."

Meanwhile, the Crimson geared up for a deluge, powered by the lethal combination of senior Amy DiMarzio and Collins.

DiMarzio scored the first two Crimson goals, both off feeds from Collins.

Then sophomore Katie Schoolwerth drove home the insurance goal off a corner kick with assists from DiMarzio and junior Tara LaSovage.

"All year we've been having difficulty scoring on corner kicks and it finally came together against Brown," Stringer said.

In a season of unfulfilled expectations, this win bodes well for the future.

"This season was definitely disappointing," Collins said. "Still it shows us what we need to do for next year.

"If we work hard we will have a good team; it's just a matter of capitalizing. We should be good next year."

This victory also marked co-captains DiMarzio and Stringer's last game in a Crimson uniform.

"We really wanted to do well for them as much as ourselves," Cowan said. "We wanted them to end on a high note."

For the seniors, this game was the last of their athletic careers and the positive note of victory isn't all they take with them.

"Losing didn't become such a weight on the team that playing was a burden," Stringer said. "This team had a special team dynamic and despite our record it was still fun." HARVARD, 3-1 at Providence, R.I. Harvard  0  3  --  3 Brown  1  0  --  1
