Sometimes the wind just doesn't blow your way.
Such is the case and such was the case for the Harvard co-ed sailing team at this weekend's NEISA Team Race Championships at Yale. Needing a top-two finish to qualify for Nationals, Harvard finished third in the nine-team tournament.
The Crimson was one of six teams to reach the second day of round robin competition yesterday by tying for first at 6-2 on the first day. Three teams tied at 6-2, and another three were 5-3, so the playing field was level, as is typical among the New England teams.
Harvard sailed to a second first-place finish yesterday, but it was unfortunately a second-place tie as well. Boston College and Connecticut College--two teams Harvard beat out for a second-place finish at the Friis Trophy Team Race two weekends ago--forced a sail-off to determine which two teams would qualify.
In the round-robin sail-off, the Crimson lost to both teams, while Conn. Col. split and B.C. swept its two races. Two additional qualifying tournaments remain on the docket--the women's sailing qualifier is the weekend of May 2 and the co-ed New England Championships are the following weekend at Brown.
