Chair :: Rachel E. Dry ’04

I’ve known for a long time that Rachel would lead FM. She has always been a clever and talented writer. One of her stories, on irony, was assigned reading for a Harvard class (Leo Damrosch’s “Wit and Humor”). Over the year she has grown into being a patient but merciless editor, allergic to bullshit, her Vermont upbringing clearly supplying her with the ideal editor’s mix of outward bucolity covering a willingness to use firearms. And only recently have we discovered her fine public speaking skills. Rachel is great. I hope that the people she works with next year will make FM as meaningful for her as she has made it for me.

Chair :: Elizabeth F. Maher ’04

Liz Maher tells it like it is. Applying for Associate Editor last year, she wrote, “I’m a bitch.” She’s brought glam to FM’s scandalous party pics as the As It Were editor, and she managed to make Listings a page some people, sometimes, were compelled to read. As chair of FM, Liz will find her perfect niche. She’ll still encourage the designers while sporting her BCBG, but somewhere in the newsroom she’ll nestle down next to a writer and mold text without making the author remember that their story was less-than-fabulous in the beginning. (She edited my cheating story via with this method in the wee hours of Wednesday morning last week and it would have been gibberish without her.) But if Liz is the left shoe, she’ll join her right shoe when she struts into the job: the estimable Rachel E. Dry. This magazine never had a better equation for success.

Associate Editor :: Irin Carmon ’05

Courting Ms. Carmon was a nerve-wracking process, since she was essentially pilfered from another department here at The Crimson. Would she like FM? Would she return FM’s calls? As it turned out, Irin was immediately infatuated with the mag. Her refreshing prose and keen nose for moving and hilarious details enliven FM’s takes on everything from dating to finding God at Harvard. FM is very excited to take the relationship to the next level.

Associate Editor :: Mollie H. Chen ’05

Mollie wrote a cover story last year about the future of Harvard—specifically, what would Harvard be like in 25 years? It was clear from that story that the future is tough to predict. What was far easier to predict, however, was that Mollie’s future and this magazine’s would be wonderfully intertwined. Her style, her grace, her unfailing kindness even in the face of great, sleep-lacking adversity are all traits the incoming guard will come to know and love even more.

Associate Editor :: William Lee Adams ’04-’05

The crowned king of endpapers, and the one and only Miss Harvard, William knows how to tug heartstrings as well as he knows how to add salacious details to even the most serious of stories. FM first fell in love with William in the fall of his first year, when he was featured in a Halloween fashion dialogue—dressed as Minnie Mouse. With countless FM stories under his writer’s belt, William brings experience and a vast amount of editorial understanding to the table. The magazine is thrilled to have him committed.

Associate Editor :: Amelia E. Lester ’05

When asked what she would do if she were not to make the cut as an FM executive, Amelia answered, “I will have to seriously reassess my life at Harvard.” With this bold statement the Australian native declared her unending devotion to the magazine and sealed her fate as an associate editor. Passionate for all aspects of magazine journalism, Amelia will be filling a special niche on the FM staff: co-director of the comp. Along with Peter L. Hopkins (see below), Amelia will ensure that the Thursday evening writers’ meetings remain brimming with talent.

Associate Editor :: Daniel K. Rosenheck ’04

Life is funny sometimes. The breeze blows one way and an ambitious young reporter finds himself tracking down sources in the VES department or attending Faculty meetings with some responsible regularity. But that poker-faced seriousness gets old after awhile. The tie needs loosening and FM is there to take it all off. Dan came to the magazine in search of something different—a bigger, flashier canvas for his in-depth reporting and quality profiles. Seek and ye shall find.

Associate Editor :: Peter L. Hopkins ’04

Pete’s good at wrangling free stuff for the magazine—a free afternoon shooting a Glock at a local firing range, a free “herbal vaporizer,” free strippers if ever the need should arise. He also freely dispenses his wit, his charm and his philosophy on men’s fashion. Pete came to FM relatively late in life. But it’s “the only thing on campus” that he reads, so he figured it would be the perfect place to contribute. The FM staff couldn’t have been happier to welcome him then and is thrilled to have him as an associate editor and co-director of the comp this coming year. That’s one whole year of hot writing tips from Pete, totally free.
