Scharmann, 8:05 p.m.: Janelle Monáe kicked off the 2020 Academy Awards with a vibrant musical number featuring colorful costumes, killer vocals, and some not-so-subtle jabs at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' failure, once again, to nominate any female directors in the Best Director category. The event, for the second year in a row, has no host.

Chris Rock and Steve Martin deliver an opening monologue.

Joy C. Ashford, 8:10 p.m.: Just because the Academy is self aware about how bad they are doesn't mean they get a pass.

The Academy prepares to announce Best Supporting Actor.
