A pedestrian was struck by a car Saturday on the corner of Oxford Street and Kirkland Street, immediately between Memorial Hall and the Science Center.
The pedestrian sustained non-life-threatening injuries and has been transported to a “local hospital,” according to Cambridge Police Superintendent Frederick Cabral. CPD and the Cambridge Fire Department responded to reports of a crash at approximately 9:45 a.m. Saturday morning, Cabral confirmed.
The driver of the vehicle remained on the scene and received a citation for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, which warrants a fine of up to $200.
The collision on Oxford Street and Kirkland Street comes after three cyclists in Cambridge were struck and killed by motor vehicles last year, sparking calls for improved cyclist and pedestrian safety.
Two cyclists were killed in collisions with trucks last June in Cambridge, including one in Harvard Square. Just three months later, a third cyclist was killed after being hit by an SUV on Memorial Drive.
The deaths prompted widespread calls for stricter truck regulations and changes to street and intersection infrastructure.
The Cambridge City Council, despite originally delaying the deadline, will require the city to install 25 miles of separated bike lanes by Nov. 1, 2026 under the Cycle Safety Ordinance — though there are no existing plans for Kirkland Street or Oxford Street.
