High school hockey star Devin Tringale recently committed to Harvard. The 17-year-old Medford native is currently a junior at Lawrence Academy in Groton, Mass.
A lifelong devotee of the sport, Tringale started playing hockey at age four.
“Hockey is huge in my family," he said. "My dad was a coach of Medford High, and he taught me how to skate.”
He joked about how when he was younger he went through a period of hating hockey but kept playing thanks to his parents' encouragement.
“Thank God,” he said.
When Tringale was looking at schools, Harvard was at the top of his list.
“When I started having contact with the coaches, I just knew it was my number one choice," he said. “I’ve been talking to them for about a year now, and when they gave me an offer, I was ecstatic...I called up Coach Donato and accepted the next day.”
Tringale and the Spartans are currently 20-8.
“I pride myself in hard work and being a good team player,” Tringale said.
Tringale expressed enthusiasm for Harvard life outside of the rink as well.
“It’s an incredible education—the doors that it opens when you go to Harvard.” He added, “To be playing for Harvard, in the ECACs, and be able to be in the Beanpot is really exciting.”
