Opening Days

The Class of 2018 arrived in Harvard Yard a week ago for the College's annual Opening Days. The week included social events, academic fairs, and programs designed to help students acclimate to life oncampus. Here are some snapshots of the week.


The Thinking Hand

The new exhibit in CGIS South, “The Thinking Hand: Tools and Traditions of the Japanese Carpenter” displays a variety of Japanese chisels. These pieces are just a few of the 62 tools on display in the new show, representing the base set of a traditional Japanese master carpenter, called a daiku.


Professor Discusses Ethics of World War II Biological Weaponry Tests

The Japanese army killed around 10,000 Chinese civilians, Russians, and American prisoners of war while testing biological weaponry during World War II, but the U.S. government withheld knowledge of the fatal tests. Even though the episode has often been overshadowed, it played a significant role in America’s ethical history, according to professor David S. Jones ’97 at the Ethics of Human Experimentation, a discussion hosted by the Harvard Undergraduate Bioethics Society Monday night.

Showing You Care Never Tasted So Good

March 11 marked the one year anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami disasters in Japan. In 2012, the aftereffects of the natural disaster have not yet subsided, and many in Japan still find themselves without home or job. A Cambridge-based fundraising initiative called Bake For Japan hopes to give buyers the chance to make a difference in the lives of impacted individuals while simultaneously indulging buyer's sweet tooths.
