Dear Reader, This week, as our compers learned about sensitive reporting, and later as our execs went through pitches, the lights in the room suddenly went off. There was some scattered arm waving to trigger the motion activation, and desperate jabbing of the light switch — but in the end, we rolled with it, continuing the meetings with the laptop screens providing illumination. Later in the week, as we hunkered down in the FM office to scrut edit, we even embraced the dark, eschewing fluorescent lighting for the soft yellow glow of string lights. This week’s scrut, from BWF and SCS, sheds light (you see what we did there?) on effective altruism, a philosophical movement that encourages followers to use statistical tools to figure out the best ways to improve the world. It is a brilliant look into EA at Harvard, weaving together interviews with many members of the group to understand why some people think EA is the best way to do good — and how deciding to join EA affects the choices its members make, from organizing socials and retreats to choosing concentrations and careers. Give it a read! NHS and YAK talk to Noah Feldman about how regulating social media platforms resembles trying to create governance systems. AGF profiles Dartmouth music professor and Radcliffe fellow William Cheng about studying video games and caring for yourself while in academia. In a witty inquiry, CL examines manifestation trends on TikTok, explaining why she, and others, may find them so enthralling. OGP and CJK visit Schlesinger to examine “It Ain’t Me Babe Comix,” the first entirely women-created comic book, discussing how its stories promoted empowered female protagonists yet also fell to some of the traps of second-wave feminism. In this week’s 15Q, HD travels to the Broad Institute to talk to biologist Pardis C. Sabeti about her research, teaching intro genetics, and her lab’s holiday cards. The endpaper, from HEK, is about her initial hesitancy to name disability and her eventual acceptance of it, touching on disability advocacy and insufficient accommodations along the way. Thank you to JJG, JH, SET, SS, MHS, and SCS for amazing designs and photos, as always. Special thanks to MQ for going all the way to the Broad, dealing with tricky emails, and taking so many amazing photos this week. A big thanks to HD for insightful scrut proofing and picking up (several) calls. Thank you to CJC for blankies and figuring out the light switch, and to HEK for a Trader Joe’s dunker and emotional support. Thank you to BLK for pizza, repping FM, and scrut comments. Thank you to MX for being endlessly generous, giving good advice, and as always, for proofing. AHL — as BWF put it “you two are the exact same height like the legs of a chair should be.” There’s no one else I’d rather do this job with. FM Love, IYG & AHL
