Valentine's Day Bare Minimum at Harvard
February 14. A day that invokes numerous feelings. Some dread it. Others look forward to it. Many just want to forget it exists.
With Valentine’s Day coming up, we (the beautiful people at Flyby) are getting ready to bear witness to both the bare minimum and absolute best that lovebirds around the country have to offer. This may feel like a lot of pressure, but don’t fret — we want all of you to blow this Valentine’s Day out of the water. While we won’t be putting our advice to use, hopefully you, dear reader, will have the opportunity to do so. Let’s see you give your significant other what they deserve! We’ve laid out six examples of what the bare minimum is nowadays while being a student at Harvard! Make us proud!
Using your Boardplus to buy them a drink.
I mean, this can’t be that hard, right? We receive a solid amount of boardplus per semester, and we’re only two weeks in. You’d be quite selfish if you kept it all for yourself. Honestly, Valentine’s Day activities should include more than a Quincy House Oreo milkshake. It should look more like taking your significant other out to get the most expensive seafood boil you can find by Boston’s harbors, or trying every flavor on the menu at J.P. Licks, but who am I kidding? Romance is dead.
Walk them to their dorm (no exceptions for the Quad) even when there’s a snowstorm.
Come on. There’s no way you’re letting them go back alone when they literally came out of their dorm during this severe weather to see you, right? Nothing is more romantic than a walk around Harvard's campus, no matter the weather. I saw someone carry a bouquet of flowers through a blizzard the other day, so there’s definitely no excuse here. The bare minimum should be more than just ensuring your SO's safety. Let’s kick it up a notch and bring not only a bouquet of flowers, but chocolates, a card, cupcakes, and, why not, a ring, while we’re at it? The weather is too bad for all of that, you say? Lame. Romance is dead.
Pulling an all-nighter at Lamont to write them a long, thoughtful card.
Time and effort = romance. If a Harvard student can become a Lamonster for the night to complete a pset, you can do it for the sake of love. I expect to see some essays neglected to get the job done. Who even needs sleep when you’re in love? Honestly, I expect more than a card. You should make an entire magazine professing and detailing your love journey from beginning to end, 200 pages, even if it takes 48 hours straight in the library. Math 21b can wait, and if it can’t, you’re just proving me right. Romance really is dead. We’re so cooked.
Build them a snowman that resembles them in the most romantic way in the Yard.
Put in the work. No gloves, no problem. You would do anything for the one you love, right? The cold is temporary, and your efforts could be what makes your love burn bright enough to warm you from the inside out. The only thing stopping you is sheer willpower. You have every stick and stone around the yard to make the best snowman ever. But why stop at one snowman? What about a snow couple? A snow family? Living in a snow house with snow pets? I guess a snowball fight works, too. Romance is dead.
Plan dates beyond Harvard and the Square.
Valentine’s Day could be the perfect excuse to escape the Harvard bubble, and who doesn’t want that? This is your opportunity to explore Boston by planning a truly romantic date or even a weekend getaway upstate. Or, let’s take it one step further and head out to the West Coast or the Rocky Mountains. There’s always hiking in New Hampshire, too, or fishing in Maine. Why not head to France? Japan? Italy? If you really cared about your SO, you would figure out a way to get onto one of those outer space escapades. If you could somehow get away with taking your bae to space…romance may be alive after all.
Customize their buffet plate in the dining hall — trust me, if you want, you can make HUDS bougie.
Boiled chicken? Grape pizza? While HUDS hasn’t provided good examples, there are ways to get creative here. Your college student budget shouldn’t stop you from enjoying lavish feasts. Make your partner the most elaborate and colorful salad ever. Turn the beef for tacos into prime rib and sirloin. Turn the catch of the day into salmon and caviar. Don’t let the dietary restrictions stop you! It might taste a bit off — it is sourced from the dhall, after all — but it’s the thought that counts! I think we accidentally backtracked here. Instead of Italy, we’re suggesting HUDS innovation? Romance is dead again.
Ultimately, Flyby wants to ensure that you remember: if they wanted to, they would. Never settle for a loser who doesn’t match your (and our) standards. They’re pretty low, so it shouldn’t be too difficult. That said, happy Valentine's Day! <3 Revive romance!
