FlyForward to March: Better Days Ahead
Congratulations, everyone! You are so close to making it out of the February rut - a time defined by bad weather, ugly Cambridge sidewalks, and the weather app constantly saying it’s 30 degrees but feels like 10 degrees. What does that even mean!? “Feels like 10 degrees” is just… 10 degrees.
But either way, March is en route. You can feel it in the air and see people’s seasonal depression start to shift. Even if the weather is giving us false hope with back-to-back freak snowstorms, that one random warm day (#neverbeenmoregratefulfor35degreeweatherbefore) is enough motivation to grind through the first two weeks of the month. So if you have become a little too comfortable throwing around “kms” these past few weeks, here’s what you have to look fl-orward to!!
1. Spring Break!
Spring break: the beautiful stretch from March 14th to March 22nd, when campus becomes a ghost town. The Yard feels suspiciously calm, dining halls are peaceful, and conversations shift from midterm stress to travel plans and home-cooked meals. Truly, the only way to do Spring Break wrong is by completing schoolwork - a fate a few will unfortunately live.
2. Better weather, thank you very much.
But, March is more than just good weather during Spring Break. Everyone, close your eyes and imagine that first actually warm day. The ropes on the steps of Widener disappear, spikeball nets magically appear in the Yard, and suddenly everyone is carrying blankets around with the intention of working outside. It might still be a little cold, but the combination of sunlight and green grass is motivation to commit to the bit.
3. Harvard is #lit.
There is one event we haven’t talked about yet: Housing Day. While some may not love that Housing Day is post-spring break, think of it as the grand finale of March. Spring Break lets you rest and briefly forget about blocking group drama, housing lottery probabilities, and the fear of being in the Quad. Then… you return to campus with anticipation still waiting for you.
Honestly, that’s part of the fun. Housing Day is one of those unique Harvard traditions that blends excitement, confusion, and anxiety. Potential blocking group chats begin again, and freshmen start to act like they don’t care about where they end up.
4. School spirit is so back.
Not only does the Charles River look perfect for a walk again, but daylight saving time will soon arrive, and we’ll be able to see campus in a new light (quite literally). And, most importantly, March 19th marks the last official day of winter — something definitely worth celebrating with a picnic, a round or ten of spikeball in the Yard or your house’s courtyard, and even potentially taking that “attendance is optional” lecture a little more seriously than you did in the winter. You pick your poison!
Whether you are counting down to Spring Break, navigating blocking group logistics, or just waiting for the day you don’t have to see snow on the ground, March is there for you. Start getting excited! We’re just two days away AHH <3
