How to Dress to Prepare for Every Type of Weather

Design by Anwen Cao

Let’s face it—Cambridge weather is unpredictable. It doesn’t matter what Harvard Today, Alexa, or your roommate suggests you wear, they will only be accurate until midday, and suddenly you’ll find yourself in a parka when it’s 72 out. But don’t fear, we’ll help you dress for any type of weather, so you’ll never find yourself in that awkward, embarrassing, and, quite frankly, deplorable situation again.

Tear-Away Pants

Too hot? Just rip those pants off! You’ll be warm on the commute to classes, and nice and breezy cool on the walk back. Too cold, just gather up the pieces and put those bad boys back on. Just don’t forget to wear something under your cool pants…because surely it’s not that hot.

Jacket Around Waist

Run it back to fifth grade and just keep a hoodie permanently tied around your waist. Scared of ruining the fit? Don’t worry, just tap into a new aesthetic. Pair the hoodie with bright-colored sweatpants, a neat graphic t-shirt, and running shoes. Now you look ready to dominate freeze-tag at recess later. The new fashion trend will catch on—someone (you) just has to start it. Thanks for taking one for the team!

Outfit Under Outfit

This is the best outfit for concealment. What outfit do you wear under your outfit…I don’t care! And no one else will either. It’s up to you whether you will strip your outer shell at some point in the day. Maybe you can wear your pajamas, or maybe shorts and a tank top—the world is full of opportunities here. Just make sure you are covering all your bases with the weather options, AKA don’t be afraid to mix cashmere with cotton.

Swimsuit Over Sweatsuit

This is an escalation of the previous option for those of you who are not intimidated. The worst outfit for concealment, but the best for gaining attention. People will be so confused about why you are wearing a bathing suit over your clothing that they won’t really care what you are wearing under your bathing suit. Besides, this gives your section crush the opportunity to admire your nice figure, accented by that flattering Speedo.

Rolling-Backpack Wardrobe

Does the weather change too much? Do you always want to be stylish? Can’t choose just one outfit for the day? Consider purchasing yourself a rolling backpack, then proceed to stuff it full of plenty of outfits suitable for any weather you might find yourself in, stranded far, far away from your dorm (we are looking at you, Quadlings).

Dissolving Swim Trunks

Are you sick of your clothes getting wet when it rains, feeling heavy, sticky, and weighing you down? Just try dissolving swim trunks. You’ll be breezy and cool in hot weather, but then if a surprise rainstorm hits, there’s one less piece of clothing sticking to you! This option is optimal for space and comfort, and it’s also really funny if you think about the prospect of HSA cleaners struggling to understand why your pants suddenly disappeared in front of their eyes…

HUDS Tray in your Backpack

No room in your bag for an umbrella? Or maybe you forgot it at home? Just stop by the closest dhall and grab a tray. It fits conveniently in the laptop compartment of your bag, and can work as an impromptu rain shield if Mother Nature calls for it. And if it randomly starts snowing (I wouldn’t put it past us, even in April), then you’ll be first in line for the Widener steps—score!

A Vampire Cape

This is like a sun parasol, but infinitely better. Forgot your sunscreen? You can protect your soft, supple skin from harsh UV with this preventative fashion choice. If the breeze catches you by surprise, you can tuck yourself away safely in the soft cover of your cape. Maybe it’s an early Halloween costume? Or a weird initiation ceremony. No one will judge you; they’ll just have serious FOMO and regret not buying that 20% off cape they saw on Amazon.
