Day in the Life of a Performative Visitas Student

Design by Victoria Chen

It’s 7 a.m. You wake up in your bed in the Charles River Hotel, booked by your parents the night before to ensure you wouldn’t be late to the day’s festivities. You shrug on your H sweater, not from the COOP but from your mom’s closet. Vintage! After donning your Annenberg tote bag (this one from the Harvard Shop—you love supporting student-run businesses), you make your way to Blank Street and order your Daydream Matcha, surely to be the envy of any other sleep-derived pre-frosh who drove five hours to get here this morning.

As you meander your way through the Yard, you admire the exterior of Grays, knowing that next year you will call the Harvard Hilton your home. (You would never be caught dead getting living Canaday or even worse, the freshman quad). After checking in at Berg, you chat with some of your friends you met at Bulldog Days. One student says they’re considering Brown, and you gasp. Of course, you applied and got into every Ivy League, but truly, the only point of decision is between the “real Ivies”: Princeton, Yale, and, of course, Harvard. You and your posse shuffle into Sanders Theater and make sure to sit in the front row floor seats for Visitas Thinks Big. Having already reviewed the works of the professors talking, you make sure to raise your hand and ask an insightful question to every presenter, showing just what a great section kid you’ll be in Expos 20.

Given your prime front row seating, you are first in line for Berg breakfast, and you beeline for the Veritaffles. When it’s ready, you sit down next to a student you don’t know, hoping to make a new LinkedIn connection. You two hit it off immediately. They went to Boston Latin, and you to Harvard-Westlake, so you find that while you have quite a few mutuals, you’ve never gotten the chance to meet in person. You two laugh at the long line of students waiting for breakfast; they don’t know you can get a Veritaffle every day. Still, you snap a picture of yours, ready for your Instagram dump later.

Exiting Berg, you and your new connection show off your Google Calendars where you’ve plotted a schedule to maximize the day’s events. You find out that both of your hosts also know each other, given that you’re each staying with a friend from high school. You show off your Partiful invite for tonight’s event and make plans to meet up at Pinocchio’s afterward for pizza (of Suits fame, of course). You both split up for the academic fair. Your friend claims to be pre-med, but you know that won’t last for long. You instead know that you are destined for a junior year JP Morgan internship and instead depart for the Econ table, where you miraculously run into Jason Furman, introduce yourself, and tell him how excited you are for Ec10A. He, astounded at your preparedness, offers you a summer internship. You politely decline, knowing that this summer is booked with your senior year trip to Bora Bora and summer comp packets.

After a tiring day of attending club events, eating free food, and accumulating merch, your feet are tired. Thankfully, your boyfriend is already a freshman on Harvard’s football team. You borrow his scooter to go to and from the SOCH (you simply can’t believe anyone ever walks, or worse, takes the shuttle). Afterward, you decide you’re too full to consider a real dinner, and instead go to Berryline for a sweet treat. Miraculously, you came at just the right time: there’s absolutely no line. So you stroll in, grab your frozen yogurt, and make your way back to the Claverly dorm you’re staying in. Saying hi to your host, you change into your going-out fit, and have the time of your life at the silent disco, reminding everyone how much better it was in London. You meet your friend at Noch’s and decide to go to the observatory open house, where you overlook the entirety of Harvard’s campus, dreaming about your life here next year.
