Bingham Announces Change In Times Of Late Afternoon Conditioning Classes

4:15, 5:15 New Hours For Exercise Groups

In order to adjust the hours of the conditioning exercises to the new meal times, the late afternoon classes will begin at 4:15 and 5:15 o'clock, instead of 4:30 and 5:30 o'clock, William J. Bingham '16, Director of Athletics, announced yesterday.

In making the change public, he also stressed that compulsory exercise this summer must be taken seriously by the students. "About 60 boys are starting Summer School on probation because they took too many athletic cuts this spring," he said as a warning.

At the same time Dean Hanford issued an official statement that one-day absences from prescribed physical training will not be excused, "but no disciplinary action will be taken provided the number of absences in the full summer term does not exceed four."

The compulsory athletic program was introduced by the University last spring in an effort to "toughen" students who would soon enter the armed forces. Seniors were exempt at first, but they have been included under the present set-up.

In past years Freshmen were required to take three athletic periods each week, while upperclassmen have been entitled to deteriorate physically if they so desired
