The response to the call for track candidates has been very unsatisfactory as yet, for only half as many men have reported as last year. A year ago over two hundred men came out, but this fall the candidates for the University and Freshman track and cross-country teams number only 110. Of these a little more than half are out for track.
It is particularly important that new men and Freshmen report for fall practice as the coaches can at this season give them considerably more attention than in the spring. There are big gaps in the University team and these can only be filled by giving the coaches a large squad of men to develop. The number of Freshmen reporting is unusually small for track as well as for cross-country. For the latter there are only about a dozen candidates and ten run on the team.
The University is fortunate in having such coaches as Donovan, Shrubb, Clark and Morrill, but they can not do themselves justice unless they have a larger number of men to work with.
