On the 5th of April will be held the annual competition examination for the Rotch Scholarship for students in Architecture. This scholarship, founded in 1883 by the children of Benjamin S. Rotch, provides an annual fund of $1,000 for two years for the competitor who posses the best examination before the Boston Society of Architects. The fund is to be used in foreign travel and study. The examination are conducted under the direction of the Boston Society of Architects, and are held at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. The examination in April 5th is a preliminary test. A problem in design will be given to those trying the examination, and they will be required do draw a sketch for it. The authors of whichever of these sketches that receive prizes will be allowed to compete for the Scholarship. They will be examined on the following subjects: History of Architecture and the Arts immediately connected with it; Elementary French, projective and perspective of shades and shadows; construction, (theory and practice); free hand drawing from the cast. This examination will last six hours. A person to be eligible for this scholarship must be under thirty years of age and must have studied two years with an Architect resident in Massachusetts.

The successful candidate will sail for Europe on the 1st of September and will return after two years of study and travel. While he is abroad he will be required to send four quarterly reports to the trustees each year. On his return he will present a report of his entire work to the Boston Society of Architects.

The gentlemen who have the direction of scholarship fund are Messrs. C. Cabot, Charles A. Cummings, R. S. Peabody, Arthur Rotch and E. M. Wheelwright.
