The Exeter and Andover Nines.

The prospects for a good nine at both Exeter and Andover this year seem very fair. At the beginning of the year it was thought that Andover would have no trouble in putting a nine on the diamond which would defeat Exeter for the third consecutive time, but at present, Andover's chances are not so bright. Her main stay will be in Stearns who played such a magnificent game all last season and who can be depended on to do work as good, if not better, this spring. Uptown will in all probability catch him. He was short-stop and change catcher on the nine last year, and is a good all around player. Mowry who was in the field last year will probably cover first base, Anderson second, and Brown, third. Owsley, who captained the Princeton preparatory school team, is trying for short-stop, while there are a number of candidates for the field.

At Exeter, there are about three batteries in training. Flagg, the captain of the team, will probably be catcher. His throwing to bases is rather poor, but he is a good catcher, and has played in the in-field on the Exeter nine for two years. Hoyt and Day are the most promising candidates for pitcher. Hoyt pitched a good game against Andover last year, and Day also proved himself competent to fill the box. Heffelfinger stands a good chance for first base, and Trafford for second. The candidates for the team are playing hand-ball a great deal, but they have not gone into strict training yet. The annual game will be played at Exeter this year.
