Base Ball.

Harvard won the third game with Brown yesterday after a wretched exhibition of ball playing for the first two innings, by a score of 4 to 3. Harvard won the game simply by bunching her hits successfully, and with the aid of a couple of errors by Brown. This was the deciding game of the series, Harvard winning the first game at Worcester, 9 to 0, and Brown the second game at Providence 4 to 3. Brown's three runs were made in the second inning by some very loose playing on Harvard's part. Five errors and a passed ball in the first two innings tells the story. Harvard's four runs were made, three in the first, on four singles and a passed ball, and Highland's home run in the seventh.

Brown came first to the bat, and Tenny led off with a short bunt, which Highlands could not get in time to field. He took second on Sexton's sacrifice, third on Hovey's fumble. Hovey retrieved himself, by a beautiful throw to the plate to cut off Sexton, who went in on Week's hit. For Harvard, Mason got out on a grounder to Steere. Hallowell got a pretty hit by Steere to left field, and stole second. Frothingham got a hit which sent Hallowell to third, while he took second on the throw. Here the men were left, as the next two men struck out.

The second inning was Brown's. Jones took first on Dickinson's fumble, second on a wild throw, and third on Cooke's hit. Cooke took second on the throw. McLane brought both men in on his hit which went through Frothingham, and Cooksecond on the attempt to catch Cooke. A passed ball brought him in. George flied out to Corbett and Tenney struck out. Sexton got his base on balls and second on Steere's hit. He tried for third, but did not count on Corbett's beautiful throw and was put out at third.

Harvard also scored three runs in the second. Dickinson took first on Steere's error and second on a passed ball. Trafford brought him in with a clean single to centre field, and took second on the throw. Corbett brought him in but was thrown out at second on Highland's hit. The latter took second on Sexton's inexcusable error and scored on Frothingham's timely single to right field. Hovey flied out for the third out.

Neither side succeeded in passing second again until Harvard's half of the seventh. With one man out, Highlands lined out one of the longest hits seen on Holmes field for years, way beyond the willows, and travelled round the bases for a home run. In the eighth Magill got a pretty three -bagger to left field but was thrown out in trying to make it a home run. Harvard went out in one, two, three order. With a man on second in the ninth and one out Tenney knocked a high foul to Mason who cleverly caught it notwithstanding the attempts of the crowd back of Brown's bench, to rattle him by yelling. Frothingham's backward catch for the third out of Sexton's long drive to right field was the prettiest play of the game.
