The Freshman Crew.

The candidates for the freshman crew met at two o'clock Saturday afternoon at the gymnasium.

About thirty-five men put in an appearance. Most of the candidates are of rather light weight and there are no noticeably large men among them. The temporary captain, J. H. Kidder. was captain of the Halcyon crew which beat the record at St. Paul's by eight and one-half seconds last year; he has been rowing for the last three years.

As soon as the men had come together, they started for the boat house and all were given a chance to go out, by eights, in the '88 barge. The primary principles of watermanship and the correct position of the body were explained to them and some time was spent in practicing with straight arms.

The candidates took hold with a will, although their ignorance of the subject, was painfully evident.

The benefit which the crew will derive from starting on the water so early cannot be overestimated. Next spring when there will be only a short time left between the races, their fall practice will place them far ahead of former freshmen crews, while they will still have the four winter months left in which to work in the gynasium.
