The exhibition given by the freshman eleven at St. Marks was most miserable; the tackling was high when they did tackle, the blocking poor, and interference conspicuous for its absence. They did not follow the ball closely. To be sure the day was hot, which told severely on the men, as they have not been used as yet to long playing.

The faults individually are as follows:

Scott was injured and therefore kept out of the plays. He will soon be all right. He did not watch the opposing team closely enough.

Cabot had a tendency to jump when he saw he was going to be tackled, did not use his head about following interference and was slow in starting, and his kicks, though long, were terribly slow.

Redpath was not strong on the defensive though his tackling was good when he got his man in the open. His rushing as usual was fast, well-judged and effective.

Rand kicks fairly quick, and moderately far, and catches well, but he missed three or four tackles, one of which cost a touchdown and another would have but for a clever sprint and tackle by Redpath. Unless he improves very much in his tackling he will never make the eleven.

Burrage at guard plays fairly well. He doesn't put nearly enough force in his tackling, but has some idea of following the ball. He knows the game pretty well.

Woodward, the other guard, is too listless, apt to be carried back by a lively opponent and plays altogether too high. He is not strong at following the ball.

Hennen made some bad misses but as the school team were so much weaker in the centre, they did not make many attempts at gains there, so the defense was not well tested. None of the three centre men, however, kept with the ball on the offensive as they should.

Fuller at tackle was strong and vigorous and made good gains when given the the ball, but he, too, tackles high, and is a little apt to over-run his man. He will make a good tackle.

Ames had an off day. He needs work and is not in condition. His playing all round was of a poor order. He does at times, though, play a good tackle, getting into the plays and tackling hard and well. He also gains good ground.

The ends, Curtis and Wadsworth, were practically substitutes. They are light and inexperienced and several times let the opposing halves come round their ends. This with the fullback's misses accounted for the closeness of the score.

Curtis is light, does not get into plays enough and is not always down on the ball.

Wadsworth is very uncertain, tackles hard and well at times and occasionally plays very well. He is apt to leave his end uncovered and is difficult to coach.

It is hoped this week to have new ends. Woods is playing well and is promising, and Newell is coming from the 'varsity squad. Edwards has played a fair end, and Goodrich, Bull and Huidekoper are other promising ends.

Rice is substitute tackle and is fair, and Stillman is expected to be good. Stowell is the only good extra man in the centre but he is too light.

There are several good quarterbacks, Hayes, Valentine and Goodrich. Hayes is at present first substitute but the others are pushing him close.

Flint is a first rate captain for the second, plays hard and well, and knows the game. He is a good man for the first substitute.

Adams is also a hard player, a good tackle and a hard rusher; he cannot judge kicks and is uncertain.

Herman has played well and hard, his kicks are sure if not long and as full-back he is the best tackler in the squad. Fincke is very promising. He rushes and tackles well but misses his tackles too often to be reliable. He is cool and catches well.

Hardenbrook and Gibbs are good players and set a good standard for the second eleven.

On the whole the material, except the centre, is very promising, but the hardest kind of work is needed to make a team out of it.
