In accordance with the rule recently adopted by the Chess Club, providing that any one of the "guard" of four men may challenge the champion to a match for his title, and that any member of the club may challenge any member of the guard for his place, S. M. Ballou, the present champion, has been challenged by J. Hewins '96. The contestants have already played five games, four of which Ballou has won. Five games must be won by either contestant in order to claim the championship.
E. E. Southard '98 has challenged A. W. Ryder '97, the sophomore champion, and J. Hewins '96 has been challenged by E. P. Fay '96 for his place on the guard.
