PRINCETON, October 7, 1896.

The formal opening exercises of the college were held in Marquand Chapel on September 23. President Patton welcomed the new students to Princeton and spoke of the arrangements for the sesquicentennial celebration, which will take place October 20, 21 and 22. The week preceding the celebration a course of public lectures will be given on popular and technical subjects by the prominent men of foreign countries who will be in Princeton at that time. A company of sixty-four men have been chosen from among the students. This company will be called he Mercer Blues and the men will be dressed in uniforms. These men will be at the head of the procession of students, which is to take place on the evening of October 21, the studens'day of the celebration.

The work on the new library building is now progressing rapidly. When completed it will undoubtedly be the largest and best equipped library building of any university in this country.

The opening football game of the season was played on Saturday, October 3, and resulted in a victory for Princeton. The teams played well for so early in the season. The practice since has shown some improvement, although some of the best players have been unable to play on account of injuries. Among the most promising new men are Edwards, from Lawrenceville; Wheeler, from St. Paul's School; Hilderbrand and Booth, from Andover, and Arthur Poe. The candidates for the Freshman football team have been called out, and a very fair team may be expected. R. Jessup from Cutler's has been elected temporary captain.

Mr. Walter Christie, late of Williams and Columbia, will take charge of the track team this year. The fall handicap games will be held on Monday, Oct. 19, and a good showing is expected from some of the new men. Tyler '97, will act as captain until the return of Robert Garrett.

The Freshman class held their organization meeting Monday, Sept. 28, and elected the following officers: Wheeler, from St. Paul's, president; Arthur Poe, vice-president, and Edwards, from Lawrenceville, secretary and treasurer.

The inter-class baseball championship was won by '97, the other classes being tied for second place. As '97 has won the championship for three successive years the Farnum cup becomes the property of that class. The most interesting game of the series was that between the sophomores and freshmen, which the latter won by the score of 1-7. This is only the second time in the past fifteen years that the freshman class has beaten the sophomores. '97 did it in their freshman year.

The Musical Clubs will not make such an extended Christmas tour this year as usual; the trip this year will include concerts in the following cities: Baltimore, Washington, Pittsburg, Fort Wayne, Chicago, Rockford, Peoria, Davenport, Des Moines, St. Louis and Louisville. A concert will be given at the Sesqicentennial Celebration on Thursday night, October twenty-second. The preliminary trials for new men on all three clubs have been held but the names of the new men have not been made public as yet.
