The qualifying round for the individual golf championship was played yesterday over the Garden City course. There were twenty-four entries in all, representing Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Columbia. From these, the men who had the best eight scores qualified as follows: Hitchcock of Yale, 80; Edwards of Columbia, 81; G. Hubbard of Harvard, 82; J. G. Averell of Harvard, 82; Stuart of Princeton, 82; Robertson of Yale, 86; Richardson of Harvard, 87; Nash of Columbia, 87.
Harvard's chances for a second victory, which are very good, depend upon Hubbard and Averell. The latter has broken the record of the course with a score of 35, and Hubbard, who won the Newport championship two years ago, is very strong on match play. The first round will be played this morning, the semi-finals in the afternoon, and the final round, which is to be 36 holes, will be played on Saturday.
