Telephone System Nearly Ready.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The University telephone system of at least forty stations, besides a central office in University Hall, will be in working order within a few days. The system will be used only for the business of the University. From 8 until 5 the switch-board in University Hall will be used. At other times the switch-board in the Cambridge central office will be used by the following five stations: University Hall fire-room, Pierce Hall, University Museum, Memorial Hall and Randall Hall. Of the other stations not more than three may be put in connection by the Cambridge central office at the same time.

Among the most important buildings in the system are the following:

Massachusetts Hall, Gore Hall, University Hall, University Museum, Pierce Hall, Divinity Hall, Law School, Boylston Laboratory, Robinson Hall, Union, Gymnasium, Astronomical Building, Rotch Building, Randall Hall, Memorial Hall, and office of the medical visitor in Thayer Hall.

In addition a subsidiary system has been arranged in Gore Hall and University Hall, by which various officers in each building will be able to communicate with each other, without the use of a central office. In this connection there will be stations in University Hall for Dean of the College, Recorder, Secretary to the President, Secretary of the Faculty, Corresponding Secretary, Secretary of the Scientific School, and Publication office; in Gore Hall, for Librarian, Assistant Librarian, Superintendent of Reading-room and Shelf Department.

Public pay-stations will probably be placed in a few of the College dormitories.
