Rare Dutch Pamphlets in Library.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The University Library has recently acquired a collection of rare Dutch pamphlets written by Sir George Downing, M.A., 1642. They relate to the Anglo-Dutch wars of 1663-67 and 1672-74, by which the colony of New Netherlands was wrested from the Dutch and renamed New York. Downing was the second student to graduate from Harvard and became Scoutmaster-general under Cromwell and later minister to Holland. He was knighted by Charles II for effecting the arrest of three of the regicide judges of Charles I. Later he instigated the measures which resulted in making New York English territory.
