The preliminary interclub class crew race, held Saturday afternoon between the Weld and Newell Sophomores, resulted in a victory for the Weld crew. The race was started up-stream from the Union Boat Club about 4.20 o'clock and was rowed over the regular mile and seven-eighths course, ending at Longwood Bridge.
The Weld boat, rowing about 26 strokes to the minute, took the lead at the start, and held its form well throughout the race. The Newell crew, which had the inside course by the Beacon street wall, started with a stroke of 24, and notwithstanding the short time the men had been together, rowed a plucky race. The time of the Weld crew was 11 minutes and 21 seconds, and that of the Newell crew 11 minutes and 41 seconds. About seven lengths of open water separated the boats at the finish.
Following were the officials: referee-T. P. Lindsay '04; judges at the finish-A. Y. Gowen '07 and G. Whitney '07; timekeepers-Vail and Rice.
The crews rowed in the following order:
Newell Sophomores-Stroke, Farrelly; 7, Warren (captain); 6, von Schrader; 5, Zanetti; 4, B. C. Merrill; 3, Paton; 2, Fargo; bow, R. Merrill; cox., Bonelli.
Weld Sophomores-Stroke, Field (captain); 7, Upton; 6, Brown; 5, Wilcox; 4, Burnett; 3, Soule; 2, Clark; bow, McIntyre; cox., Risley.
