1907 TEAM WON BASEBALL

Defeated Yale Freshmen in Slow and Uninteresting Game.--Score 6 to 2.

The Freshman baseball team defeated the Yale freshmen on Soldiers Field, Saturday, by the score of 6 to 2.

During the first six innings the game was mainly a pitchers' battle, and though enlivened by some fast fielding, was slow and uninteresting. Harvard scored in the second inning when Evans went home from second on Grant's single, and again in the sixth, when Giles reached third on an error by Church and was brought in by Mahar's single. Yale's two runs were made in the third inning, when Barnes made a two-base hit and Emerick a single. Both scored on Ford's single.

In the eighth, Tweed reached first on Church's error. Dexter bunted along the first-base line, but reached his base safely, and Russell followed with another bunt. Tweed was put out at third, but Giles was hit by a pitched ball, and went to first, filling the bases. Mahar was then given his base on balls, forcing Dexter home, and on Evans' single, Giles and Russell scored. Mahar was let in on a passed ball.

Harvard won through opportune hitting, though the batting was generally weak. The fielding, however, was swift and accurate. Brennan was the steadier of the two pitchers, struck out nine men, and allowed no bases on balls. Pratt struck out only six men, gave two bases on balls, and hit one man. Dexter and Evans both played their positions well, and Foster and Giles in the outfield each fielded their two chances cleanly. The Yale team was weak in fielding and threw to bases poorly.
