Indoor Baseball Practice During Week

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Since the last cut in the University baseball squad, made two weeks age, the candidates have been holding regular daily practice in the Cage. The work has been elementary, and aimed chiefly at grounding the large number of inexperienced men in the fundamental points of the game. Every afternoon, beginning at 1.30 o'clock, the pitchers and catchers do light battery work, under the supervision of Coach Coburn, followed by batting practice for the fielding candidates. Special efforts are being made to develop a heavy hitting team, which will offset to considerable extent the lack of experience among the battery candidates. In this respect the work of the past two weeks has been encouraging, as the men are batting and bunting well. In the field the work has progressed fairly well, although the passing to first base is still inclined to be wild. Some practice in second base work has been held, and entire squad is given a short run inside the cage.

Although the squad is better graded for the time of the year than in previous seasons, owing to the earlier commencement of work, nevertheless the outlook is not especially encouraging. With the first game of the season only a little over three weeks away the work so far has been very elementary. No man is yet sure of a position, and until the outdoor practice begins, which is further delayed by the present condition of the weather, no real team play can be developed. No more cuts will be made until the southern trip in April.
