University Crews in Time Row

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Yesterday afternoon the University crew defeated the second by a length and a half over the 1 and 7-8 miles course down stream from the Longwood bridge to the Union Boat Club. The time made, 9 minutes and 40 seconds, although 29 and 1-5 seconds better than that made by Cornell in the race last year was slower than was made by the University crew in practice last year. It was also the slowest time made by the crew this year. The conditions for the race were not unfavorable, although the tide was extremely low.

The second crew started about two and a half lengths ahead of the University crew and rowed a higher stroke throughout the race. Just below the Harvard bridge the University crew passed the second and gained during the remainder of the race, especially in the spurt when Filley raised the stroke to 33. Just after the finish the University shell ran aground alongside the float at the Union Boat Club. On the way down stream the shell also ran aground on a bar just above the Longwood bridge.

W. W. Corlett '06, who had not been rowing since the middle of March, reported again yesterday and rowed in the fouroar.

The orders:

University crew--Stroke, Filley; 7, Newhall; 6, R. Bacon; 5, Richardson; 4, Glass; 3, Tappan; 2, Fish; bow, Flint; cox., Blagden.

Second crew--Stroke, Morgan; 7, Emmons; 6, Swaim; 5, Lowell; 4, Warren; 3, Gill; 2, Richards; bow, Wiggins; cox., Arnold.

Four-oar crew--Stroke, Ball; 3, Corbett; 2, G. Bacon; bow, Corlett; cox., Whitney.
