The anniversary of Professor Charles Eliot Norton's birthday, November 16, 1827, will be observed in the College Library today by placing on exhibition in the Treasure room a number of volumes selected from his library. In the spring of 1905 an arrangement was made with Professor Norton by which the more valuable portion of his library should pass into the possession of the College Library at his death. The exhibition today will be open to members of the University from 10 to 1 o'clock.
The collection is remarkable for its specimens of early printing, early illustrated books, and original editions of literary works. There are also books on exhibition presented to Professor Norton's father by Mrs. Hemans, Miss Edgeworth, and Joanna Baillie, as well as early American imprints, which have never passed from hand to hand by sale. John Donne's works are represented by a remarkable collection, including four manuscripts and the early editions of his poetry and prose.
A subscription of $10,000 was raised in 1905 and presented to the College, the annual income of which was to be used in adding to the collection of books which Professor Norton sent to the College Library before his death. The signatures of the 581 contributors and the following address mounted in a handsomely bound volume, were presented to Professor Norton: "To Charles Eliot Norton from his students, associates, and friends in appreciation of his services to Harvard University; in admiration of his life-long devotion to high ideals in letters, art, and civic duty; in gratitude for his hospitality, friendship, and inspiration."
