FALL CREW WORK TO BEGIN

Fall rowing for candidates for the University eight will begin this afternoon at 3.30 o'clock. After the usual weeks of preliminary practice, Coach Wray will select at least three eights which will row until cold weather begins. The fall practice will be closed with a handicap race between these three crews some time in November.

Candidates Expected to Report.

The following men will report at the Nowell boathouse at 3.30 o'clock: C. T. Abeles '13, K. Appollonio '15, E. K. Carver '14, F. L. Converse '14, C. H. Crombie '14, E. D. Curtis '14, L. Curtis, Jr., '14, G. C. Cutler, Jr., '13, H. Francke '15, T. J. D. Fuller, Jr., '15, H. Gallaher '15, A. M. Goodale '13, B. Harwood '15, G. K. Lothrop '15, G. M. MacVicar '15, G. von L. Many Experienced Men Available.

Although five men who rowed in the victorious shell at New London last June have been lost by graduation, all the members of the four-oared crew last spring are available this year, besides six from the Freshman boat. The veterans from the 1912 University eight are Captain C. T. Abeles '13, coxswain; A. M. Goodale '13, 4, who has been in the University shell for two years besides rowing on and captaining his Freshman crew; L. H. Mills '14, 5, on the University crew last year and captain of the Freshman crew two years ago; Q. Reynolds '14, 3, also in the University shell of last year, as well as the Freshman shell of the previous year. These four should form a strong nucleus for the 1913 crew.

From the four-oared boat, are L. S. Chanler, Jr., '14, who probably cannot row until spring, however, on account of difficulties with the Office; E. D. Morgan, Jr., '13, F. H. Trumbull '14, and F. Stratton '13. All four are promising candidates, Morgan, especially, seeming a likely man for the eight. Other men who have had experience in training for the University crew are A. Taylor '14 and G. von L. Meyer, Jr., '13. Meyer broke his leg in the early part of last season and was unable to row at all. He was, however, a member of his Freshman crew. Taylor also rowed in his Freshman boat.

The oarsmen from last year's Freshman crew, some of whom, at least, should given the veterans a hard fight for a position, are H. Francke, 2; T. J. D. Fuller, bow; B. Harwood, 6; G. M. MacVicar, 3; H. H. Meyer, 7; W. B. Pirnie, stroke. Meyer, like Chanler, will probably be unable to row this fall.

Judging from the prospects at this time, the crew next June will be lighter than in previous years; but, since there is so much experienced material to draw from, none the less fast.

Freshmen Will be Called Out Later.

The Freshmen will report for practice at a somewhat later date, and more emphasis will be laid upon their work this fall than has been the case in recent years. After sufficient preliminary competition, two eights will be selected, which will be kept at work until late in the season. This year, more than in previous years, special emphasis will be laid upon the fall work, and each individual candidate will be given a large amount of personal attention. If possible, a race will be arranged between these crews and a picked graded crew of men who rowed in the dormitory and class races.

It is probable that the Crane shell, which was tried without much success last spring but which has been re-rigged since then, will be put into use again this fall
