GOOD TIME MADE BY CREWS

Harvard Training Quarters, Red Top, New London, Conn., June 5, 1912.--The University crew rowed over the four-mile course this afternoon, the Freshmen pacing the Varsity for the first two miles. In spite of the fact that the stroke was kept well below a racing pace the time was particularly good for so early in the season. The crews were favored by fair wind and tide.

Both eights left the mark rowing about 34 strokes to the minute. The Varsity pulled a quarter of a length ahead, then lowered the stroke to 30 and at the half-mile to 28. The Freshmen throughout rowed two points higher than the Varsity. At the mile and a half flag they were about a length behind. Then Coach Wray ordered them to spurt. The stroke was raised to 36 and they pulled up on even terms with the University eight, which in turn raised the stroke to 34 and was half a length ahead of the Freshmen when they dropped out at the two-mile flag. Continuing on alone the Varsity dropped the stroke to 30 again and maintained that pace until within a half-mile of the finish, when the stroke went up to 36. The row was on the whole encouraging, for when a high stroke was attempted at the finish the men still kept their length, not clipping short at both ends of the stroke.
