FRESHMEN HELD TO 0 TO 0 TIE

SPIRITED ONSLAUGHT CHECKED AT DEAN'S 3-YARD LINE BY CALL OF TIME.

The Freshman team played a no score game with Dean Academy Saturday afternoon on the Freshman field. Neither team could hold the ascendency long enough to score, though both goals were several times threatened; the Freshmen had the ball on Dean's three yard line, when the game ended, and Dean actually had the ball across the goal-line in the third quarter but was called back on a penalty.

Hitchcock and Sweetser did good work for the Freshmen, but the particular star of the game was Welch, captain and fullback of the Dean team, who consistently ran back punts for 20 or 25 yards, and baffled the Freshman team with his accurate forward passing.

In the first period the Freshmen had the advantage for the ball was almost continually in Dean territory. The Freshmen received the kick-off and worked the ball 60 yards before a forward pass blocked by Jones gave it to Dean; a long end run by Dinan bringing it back to the middle of the field.

The second and third periods almost proved disastrous for the Freshmen, for Dean had the advantage almost all the time. Welch started with two clever forward passes, but Hitchcock caught a third and ran it back 30 yards. Later in the second period Dean was again within the ten-yard line, but Sweetser intercepted a forward pass and ran it to the 50-yard line. The third period started in a kicking contest in which Harris of the Freshmen had a slight advantage over Welch, but toward the end Dean worked a succession of trick plays, which the Freshmen were unable to size up. Arriving at the ten-yard line a forward pass from Welch to Kean sent the ball over, but Dean was penalized for holding and Harris punted into safe territory.

In the fourth period Dean was unable to gain through the Freshman line, while the Freshmen gained consistently on straight line plays and had the ball on the Dean three-yard line when time was called.
