POWERFUL ATTACKS TO CLASH

WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON'S UNDEFEATED SCORING MACHINE IN STADIUM.

The University football team will meet Washington and Jefferson in the Stadium this afternoon at three o'clock. The contest, due to the weaknesses which Harvard has developed in the last few days, and due to the reputed power of the opponents, is creating an intensity of interest unusual in an early season game.

It is an inferior eleven which the University will put in the field. The past week has seen the removal of both Mahan and Logan from the backfield. This has necessitated the shifting of Hardwick from right end to Mahan's place in the backfield, and the substitution of Weatherhead at right end and Watson at quarter. These men, though they played well in the Springfield game, have not yet proved themselves up to standard. At all events, it is unfortunate that any but the strongest line-up must face Washington.

Washington and Jefferson, on the other hand, presents a seasoned eleven at the height of its power. Every man is experienced, knows his team-mates and their limitations thoroughly, has been trained to the style of game that wins except against the strongest opponents, and has played at one time or another against the best teams in the East.

Early Season Record.

In its opening game this year, Washington and Jefferson is said to have been in poor form, but they managed to defeat Union 26 to 2. Last week Dickinson was overwhelmed by the tremendous total of 105 to 0, the victors making fifteen touchdowns, thirteen goals from touchdowns, and one field goal. This defeat moreover, was administered almost wholly through the medium of straight "closed" football, not through the more open style which Washington has found most effective.

While the team as a whole is light, averaging about 170 pounds, the line from tackle to tackle is unusually heavy and powerful. The method of attack is varied, ranging from straight plunges against weaker teams to wide end runs and forward passes against the stronger. The backfield has something of Harvard's versatility. Young at fullback is a line plunger hard to stop, while Fleming at right half is particularly good on short end dashes. The offense, however, is centered around Spiegel, one of the speediest men on the gridiron today. He shines brightest on long end runs, usually started from the punter's position and once he gets by the opposing end, he is likely to prove dangerous. Paterson at left tackle is a place-kicker of ability, having many scores to his credit from as far back as the 60-yard line.

But in spite of its many qualifications Washington and Jefferson is likely to find it surprisingly hard to make the kind of headway it is hoping for against Harvard. The opponents' defence has been rudely built, and though it is strong, may not prove impregnable. As for the attack, with the University's weakened line, it is here that Washington's menace is greatest; yet Harvard may be counted upon to hold Spiegel in check far better than anyone he has met this year.

Both the University and Washington and Jefferson team spent an hour in light practice yesterday afternoon in the Stadium. Dummy scrimmage, signal drill, and practice in kicking composed the work of either team.

Transportation Service.

The new Back Bay tunnel to Park street and the Cambridge tunnel to the Stadium station will give prompt service from all points in Boston to the Stadium for today's game against Washington and Jefferson. Extra surface cars will be run from Dudley street to Harvard square and from Central square through Western avenue to North Harvard street, the nearest point to the Stadium for surface cars.

The line-up of the two teams will be as follows:
