EXCITING RACES IN CARNIVAL

There was keen competition in all the events run on the first day of the eighth annual Winter Carnival yesterday. The dashes, hurdles and class relay trials were particularly close. The race between 1914 and 1915 was hard-fought, the Juniors getting the lead in the last four relays and keeping it to the finish. Today the 7-lap race and the finals of the class relay races, 1914 vs. 1917, will be run. The pole-vault has been postponed till tomorrow. The summary is as follows:

45-yard high hurdles.--First, T. O. Freeman '14; second, R. G. Carter '16; third, M. P. Robinson '15; time, 6 2-5 seconds.

40-yard dash (handicap).--Won by R. W. Stanley '17; second, W. Rollins '16; third, J. L. Foley '15; time, 4 4-5 seconds.

1914 vs. 1915.--Won by 1915; time, 5 minutes, 9 1-5 seconds.

1916 vs. 1917.--Won by 1917; time, 5 minutes, 8 4-5 seconds.

13-lap race--Won by A. R. Bancroft '17; second, R. S. Cook '17; third, S. Sewall '16; time, 4 minutes, 44 3-5 seconds.

Field Events.

16-pound shot-put--Won by R. T. P. Storer '14; distance 39 feet, 7 inches; second, W. W. Webber '17; distance, 37 feet, 5 inches; third, E. Ellison '17; distance, 37 feet, 3 inches.

High jump (handicap).--Won by E. C. Danforth '15 (3 inches), height 5 feet, 9 3-4 inches; second, A. T. Bunten '14 (3 inches), height 5 feet, 8 3-4 inches; third, B. Randall uC. (scratch), 5 feet, 9 inches.

Broad jump.--Won by M. L. Greeley '15, distance, 20 feet, 3 1-2 inches; second, H. W. D. Rudd '15, distance, 20 feet, 3 inches; no third prize awarded.
