ELEVEN FACES SOUTHERNERS

The University football team opposes the strong Virginia eleven on Soldiers Field this afternoon at 3 o'clock. Considering the University squad's crippled condition and the formidable record made thus far by the southerners, Harvard will be very fortunate to pull out a victory. Virginia sends up a team which man for man will probably excel the University in a number of positions. Except for Stillwell, an end, who is slight and tall the men present a very symmetrical line-up; each man experienced, big, alert, fast and strong. This eleven last year won the championship of the sough and two weeks ago today, by using a carefully planned defense and by taking every advantage of its opponents' tactical mistakes, defeated Yale at New Haven by a 10 to 0 score. In attack, Virginia depends on Sparr's swift line smashes on Berkeley's shifty end runs, and no Thurman's long punts and dropkicks. So far the team has no showed a disposition toward the deceptive play for it has found speed, strength, and alertness quite sufficient for victory.

Captain Mahan will do the punting and offers a good threat to the effectiveness of Thurman's punting, and with Willcox should show the southerners something in the way of fast and tricky open-field running. Whether or not the Harvard line will prove of sufficient strength to let King and Whitney get in some effective line-plunging, remains to be seen. Whichever way the situation is regarded, the University eleven is today in serious danger of meeting a tartar.

The officials for today's game will be N. Tufts, of Brown, referee; D. L. Fultz, of Brown, umpire; S. Pishon, of Dartmouth; linesman; and Lieutenant F. A. Prince, of West Point, extra official. Tickers at 50 cents and 75 cents can be procured at the H. A. A. office, and at Leavitt & Peirce's and may also be had at the gate.
