NEW MACHINE GUN COMPANY

STUDENTS OF UNIVERSITY AND TECHNOLOGY JOINED IN MILITARY FORCE.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A machine gun company in the 8th Massachusetts Infantry has been formed from students of the University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The full complement will be fifty men, and now about half that number have been enlisted. Any student in the University, over eighteen years of age, is eligible, subject to a physical examination. The term of enlistment is three years.

The work of this company is especially interesting, in that it combines both infantry and artillery tactics. The work of the company consists chiefly in drills which are held either on Friday night at the Armory on Massachusetts avenue or manoeuvres, which are held frequently on Saturday afternoons at Weston. At these manoeuvres practical problems, such as selecting positions favorable for defense or offense, will be treated, as well as target practice. There will be no summer work, except during the latter part of June or the first part of July, when the company will be at the State Camp for about eight days.

Captain F. J. Burnham, assisted by Lieutenant W. G. Renwick, is in charge.
