HOCKEY MEN SHOWED GAIN IN SPEED AND ACCURACY

TEAM A BLANKED SCRUBS

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The University hockey squad, reduced to 37 by a cut on Saturday, went through a stiff practice at the Arena yesterday afternoon. After the preliminary shooting and passing practice which was faster and more accurate than before because of the greatly diminished squad on the ice, the regulars were sent against team D whom they succeeded in keeping from scoring while making three goals themselves.

On the whole the work of the men was more like mid-season form than, it has yet been. They handled the puck cleanly when receiving passes and did not have to stop to pick it up or follow wild shots down the sides of the Arena. E. O. Baker '17 and T. H. Rice '17 did some pretty passing on the left side of the rink, but the scoring was all the result of individual playing. G. A. Percy '18 got the first goal at the very start of the practice but though the line carried the puck up the rink time and again, and had frequent scrimmages in front of team D's goal, it could not shoot it in. R. E. Gross '19, substituting for H. M. Bliss '17, finally scored when he dribbled the puck past the defence and shot it into the goal. A few minutes later, Captain J. E. P. Morgan '17 took the puck from behind his own goal and skated around the entire substitute team, pass- ing to Percy who made the last tally.

Percy played a steady game and showed much skill in getting the puck away from the opposing forwards. He and Captain Margin used their sticks well and did some fast skating down the rink. J. I. Wylde '17 stopped several particularly hard shots and was an important factor in shutting out the substitutes.

Football Men Report.

Several of the men were unable to report because of a geology field trip, but four members of the football squad practised for the first time, these being C. A. Clark '19, A. W. Gardner '18, M. Phinney '19 and W. Platte '19. Phinney played a fast, heady game and succeeded in making a goal for team C in its game against B. Platte also did some good work, breaking up several rushes of the regulars. T. C. Thatcher '18 was not at the Arena but is expected to report tomorrow.

Sixty Freshmen at First Practice.

The Freshman squad numbering about 60 reported behind Hemengway Gymnasium for the first practice yesterday afternoon. The men were divided into two squads, each of which was given a half hour of shooting practice, followed by a short conditioning run. Coach Smart directed the practice and Captain Morgan assisted him in the supervision of the men. J. I. Wylde '17 coached the goals, who were few in number and a good many more of whom are needed. Owing to the lack of ice, practice will be held every other day until Christmas.

Both rinks have already been set up in the Stadium so that there will be an opportunity to skate there as seen as it is cold enough for ice. This is the earliest date these rinks have ever been put up
